Description

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at Tufts University invites applications for a full-time faculty position. This tenured faculty member will also serve as Director of the Tufts Advanced Microscopic Imaging Center (TAMIC) for the School of Engineering. We seek individuals who embrace opportunities to work collaboratively and contribute to one or more of the School of Engineering's (SOE) strategic research areas: Human Health and Bioengineering; Human-Technology Interface; Energy, Water and the Environment; Intelligent Systems; Learning Science.

Established in 2002, the Biomedical Engineering Department is housed in the Science & Technology Center and in the Science & Engineering Complex at Tufts University. The Department currently consists of 12 full-time core faculty, 11 Research Faculty, 2 Professors of the Practice, as well as part-time and affiliate faculty. Faculty scholarship spans a broad spectrum of interests such as sensing systems, including biophotonics, medical optics and electronics, imaging, and biosensing devices, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, biomaterials, and cellular agriculture. The Department offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees in biomedical engineering, MS degrees in bioengineering and biophotonics, and an MS and PhD in materials science and engineering. BME also offers certificates in biomedical engineering, biophotonics, and cellular agriculture. Recognized for its excellence in research, the Department has an enrollment of approximately 165 undergraduate students, 60 MS and 60 PhD graduate students. Please see https://engineering.tufts.edu/bme/ for more information.

TAMIC, located in the Science & Engineering Complex, offers a wide array of optical and spectral quantitative imaging techniques for the chemical and structural characterization of materials at submicron scales. The Center specializes in confocal and multi-photon imaging of biological specimens and engineered tissues and is staffed with a full-time Laboratory Manager who maintains Center's equipment, coordinates user training, and schedules user access to the Center. For more information, please see: https://engineering.tufts.edu/imagingcenter.

Tufts University's School of Engineering is amid a period of extraordinary growth that has seen the recruitment of many outstanding faculty members, a quadrupling of funded research over the last ten years, the addition of new buildings and laboratory space, an emphasis on inclusion and building diversity, and major curriculum initiatives at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Tufts Engineering distinguishes itself by the interdisciplinary and integrative nature of its education and research programs within the environment of both a "Research Class 1" university and a top-ranked undergraduate institution. Tufts offers the best of a liberal arts college atmosphere, coupled with the intellectual and technological resources of a major research university. Located on Tufts' Medford/Somerville campus, only five miles from historic downtown Boston, Engineering faculty members have extensive opportunities for academic, clinical, and industrial collaboration, as well as participation in the rich intellectual life of the region. As home to seven graduate and professional schools across three campuses, Tufts University prides itself on its culture of cross-School partnerships and supports and encourages a culture of interdisciplinary scholarship. There are numerous such opportunities within the School of Engineering and the School of Arts and Sciences as well as the School of Medicine, the School of Dental Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, the Fletcher School, and the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine.
