The CT Scan Technologist operates computed tomography (CT) scanners to produce cross-sectional radiographs of patient's body for diagnostic purposes. The CT Scan Technologist is responsible for monitoring and maintaining essential patient care and safety including practicing ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable).Major Responsibilities: Follows all Quality Control policies and procedures for compliance with departmental, local, state and federal regulations. Uses radiation safety measures and protection devices to comply with government regulations, hospital policy, and to ensure safety of patients and staff. Greets patients politely and efficiently. Takes thorough and accurate patient medical histories. Explains procedures and observes patients to ensure safety and comfort during scan. Competent in starting IV's for imaging requiring contrast administration. Seeks out Interpreter Services if needed. Administers contrast media orally intravenously under the supervision of a radiologist or covering MD. Sets up examination area, ensuring that all necessary equipment and supplies are available. Positions and immobilizes patient on examining table, using supportive devices to obtain precise patient position and following protocols specified by Radiologist or other supervisor. Follows sterile techniques according to hospital policy. Enters data, such as type of scan requested, slice thickness, scan time, and other technical data into computer, using knowledge of radiologic technology and computed tomography. Operates CT scanner to scan designated anatomical area of patient. Talks to patient over intercom system and observes patient reactions through window of control room to monitor patient safety and comfort. Reports all abnormal signs to physician. Views images of organs or tissue on video display screen to ensure quality of pictures. Starts camera to produce radiographs. Evaluates images and computer-generated information for technical quality. Records, processes and maintains patient data, documents and treatment records in a timely and thorough manner. Collaborates with other medical team and administrative staff members, such as physicians and nurses, to conduct special and routine procedures or complete administrative duties. Performs scheduled maintenance and minor emergency repairs on radiographic equipment, or reports problems to supervisor. Performs all duties in compliance with government regulations, hospital policy and procedure, and safety guidelines. Works with students and follows all guidelines and policies associated with students.All responsibilities are essential job functions.
  • Required:Graduate of an accredited radiological technology program. Current registration by the ARRT and registered or eligible for ARRT registration in CT. Licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Health: Radiation Control Program. Must maintain licensure on an annual basis. Must be CPR certified and keep certification current.
Experience/Skills:Prior experience as a Radiological Technologist. Strong organizational and communication skills. Thoroughly knowledgeable in anatomy, patient positioning, examination techniques, equipment protocols, radiation safety, radiation protection and basic patient care. Ability to communicate clearly in English with patients to explain procedures and ensure safety and comfort during scans. Ability to follow procedures and policies. Ability to use radiation safety measures and protection devices to comply with government regulations and to ensure safety of patients and staff. Ability to process, review and evaluate images or computer-generated information to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes. Ability to record, process and maintain thorough and accurate patient data, medical histories, treatment records and reports. Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical staff, personnel, students, and patients. Ability to read, write and speak clearly in English. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
