Job Description

Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Lead Technologist and following established procedures performs a variety of technical radiologic procedures using standard portable and/or specialized x-ray equipment to apply prescribed ionizing radiation in order to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients* illness and injuries. Performs related tasks such as assisting patients in positioning for correct anatomical exposure maintaining order and cleanliness of work area and performing routine clerical tasks.

Responsibilities:
Transfer positions and instructs patients regarding the procedure in order to obtain and effect the desired radiographic diagnostic results as specified by the physician; utilizes immobilization and other devices for holding or positioning the patient as necessary.



Provides protection to unaffected areas of the body from radiation exposure utilizing lead shield in accordance with prescribed safety standards.



Calculates and selects proper technical factors such as voltage current exposure time and focal distance based on such information as patient*s size physical condition and suspected pathology. Checks equipment and accessories to insure they are in proper operating condition.



Assists physician in the performance of specialized examinations such as intravenous phelography by preparing syringes and contrast media holding and turning patients administering barium contrast media and passing instruments and supplies.



Selects and loads proper film. Operates x-ray equipment according to specific diagnostic procedure and in conformance to established routines and techniques. Reviews processed film to ensure that it is of acceptable quality and completeness for diagnostic purposes. Utilizes portable x-ray equipment to execute diagnostic procedures in patient rooms surgery and in other instances where it is not feasible to transfer the patient to regular treatment room.



Ensures that films examination requisitions and other related records are properly completed for proper patient identification statistical and billing purposes.



Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition and ensures that examination rooms are properly supplied with equipment and materials.



Understands and practices ALARA principles of Radiation Protection including the use and exchange of personal dosimeters.



May provide guidance to students or other unit personnel in methods techniques and procedures.

Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Registration through the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists as well as two years formal training in an accredited School of Radiologic Technology required.



Current and valid license from the Department of Health to practice in the State of Rhode Island.



Ability to operate all types of x-ray and related equipment push portable equipment transfer and position patients.



Conceptual ability to determine means of providing requested radiographs of acceptable diagnostic quality based on specifics of each case.



Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.



Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.



EXPERIENCE:

Between one and three months orientation and on-the-job training in order to become familiar with job responsibilities.



WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Main Radiology Department or smaller satellite operation where there is little discomfort due to noise dust or temperature.



Exposed to radiation but there is little change of illness or injury when established safety procedures are followed.



Continuous standing along with walking pushing of portable radiographic equipment lifting and positioning of patients is required.



Some exposure to odors from human waste and chemicals from automatic film processing equipment is experienced.
