Archaeologist

HDR is looking for a qualified professional archaeologist, to assist with a variety of projects throughout eastern North America including New England, the Northeast, and Midwest. Project work will likely include pedestrian surveys, shovel testing, and may include excavation or other field tasks. You may lead crews in identifying cultural materials, collecting data, recording sites using state-specific protocols, and providing support for National Register of Historic Places evaluations. You will coordinate with the Senior Archaeologist/Principal Investigator daily to plan and coordinate fieldwork. This is a full-time position, eligible for comprehensive HDR benefit programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct cultural resource field crews to complete fieldwork safely and efficiently
  • Perform fieldwork (survey, testing, or excavation) and assist PI with field tasks
  • Coordinate land access, field crew progress, and daily data transfer and management
  • Prepare and review site forms
  • Effectively communicate and support teamwork across multiple disciplines, both internally and externally
  • Collect, organize, and perform QA/QC for field data
  • Conduct morning tailgate safety and coordination meetings
  • Manage and maintain field equipment
  • Possible opportunity to assist with technical reporting for Phase I and II archaeological reports and all associated documentation and data forms, depending on workload
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism at all times
  • Other duties as required.

Note that extensive travel for this role is required (approximately 60%)

Required Qualifications

Experience and qualifications for success:

  • Bachelor's degree in archaeology, anthropology or a closely related field is required
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and demonstrate ability to coordinate effectively with senior staff and other project personnel
  • Strong leadership and supervision abilities, including problem solving, constructive conflict resolution, and decision making
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Team player with strong ability take initiative and solve problems using sound judgment
  • Current valid driver's license and the ability to safely operate a vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads is required
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience with a range of field methodologies; including survey, testing, and excavation.
  • Minimum of 1 year of supervising archaeological fieldwork.
  • Masters degree would be preferred.
  • Candidates who reside locally to identified locations are preferred.

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions. Temporary and part-time roles eligible for limited benefits.) In upstate NY (Albany and Syracuse) the Pay Transparency range for this position is $46,550-$66,500 annually.
