Position Summary

EBI Consulting is seeking an Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist to work as an embedded employee as part of our Environmental team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing health and safety consulting services to biotech companies, pharmaceutical companies, research facilities, health care institutions, educational institutions, and diversified manufacturers. The ideal candidate will have a background in OSHA and EPA regulatory compliance, environmental health & safety program development, risk identification, and compliance auditing.

This position reports to the Director of EHS Services and will be an embedded employee on site at one or more of our client's facilities in the Boston, MA metro area. As such, candidates will need to already be established in this area, have the ability to commute into an office daily, and be comfortable with an office work environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the implementation and continuous improvement of the Environmental, Health, and Safety programs including but not limited to emergency preparedness, fire safety, environmental compliance, hazardous and biological waste management, industrial hygiene, biosafety, occupational health, respiratory protection, ergonomics, and training
  • Conduct EHS inspections of all building/facility areas, including lab inspections, and assist with implementation and documentation of corrective and preventative actions
  • Perform EHS hazard and risk assessments including basic industrial hygiene monitoring, Job Hazard Analyses, new equipment evaluations, and prepare written recommendations to control hazards
  • Assist with general filing, facility signage maintenance, management of personal protective equipment programs, chemical inventory maintenance, and Sharepoint online file management
  • Assist in securing and renewing EHS permits from regulatory agencies
  • Develop and conduct EHS training, including laboratory safety, bloodborne pathogens/biosafety, emergency procedures, respiratory protection, and annual safety training
  • Support the hazardous and biological waste program by conducting spot inspections of hazardous waste collection areas, maintaining waste records, and responding to questions and request
  • Identify and address EHS issues and employee concerns. Participate in and support EHS events and committee meetings
  • Work closely with employees to promote safe research and development practices, procedures, including the proper use of containment equipment and identifying the appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Support emergency response operations, assist with incident investigations, and implement corrective actions as necessary. Must be comfortable responding to emergencies as a shared responsibility
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Capabilities

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, life sciences or a related field
  • 2 - 3 years of professional work experience required in EHS programs, with experience in pharmaceutical/biotechnology research and development environment, preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of EHS permitting and regulations related to OSHA, City of Cambridge, RCRA/DOT/IATA, DEA and MA DPH Controlled Substances as they apply to biotechnological R&D facilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with key partners/vendors
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication and effective oral presentation skills
  • Effective in working as part of a team, self-motivated and able to work independently with a collaborative mindset, with strong problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making skills
  • Accessing laboratories requires the individual to wear pants, closed toed shoes, safety glasses and appropriate coverings.
