GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Center for Genomic Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is seeking a motivated candidate to provide support as a Genetic Counseling Assistant (GCA) to the Genomic Medicine Unit, the Preventive Genomics Clinic and other established clinics at MGH. This individual will work under the general direction of the Chief Genomics Officer with daily supervision provided by genetic counselors. The GCA will be responsible for genetic and administrative duties, with opportunities to participate in research as time allows. Individuals in this position will gain first-hand knowledge of patient care workflows related to the field of genetics spanning multiple subspecialties. This position may be ideal for someone considering a career in genetic counseling, or in another healthcare-related field.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Assist with pre-visit preparation, including collection of relevant medical records and lab reports, medical records review, and coordination of patient intake forms
* Assist with genetic testing, including: packaging and shipping clinical testing specimens, completing genetic testing requisition forms, and working with laboratories and health insurance providers for the purpose of obtaining insurance coverage for genetic testing
* Follow HIPAA guidelines for the management of patient privacy and confidentiality
* Act as a liaison between genetic testing laboratories, health insurance providers, and genetic counselors and physicians
* Communicate with patients, as necessary, related to appointment
* Maintain patient databases for patients who undergo genetic testing
* Maintain stock of testing kits, patient handouts, and other supplies
* Assist with the creation of patient education materials and patient-centered educational events.
* Assist with Genomic Medicine Unit's implementation initiatives, as needed
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
* Exceptional computer skills (including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
* Excellent attention to detail
* Strong organizational and time management skills
* Must be able to communicate effectively (both oral and written) with clinicians and patients
* Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
* Must be comfortable transporting sealed biological specimens
QUALIFICATIONS:
* BA/BS required, preferably in biology, genetics, or a related field
* Experience working with patients and/or administrative experience in a medical office is a plus
